dc.description.abstract This is a mixed methods, qualitative and quantitative study which aims to look at caregiving for juvenile type 1 diabetics from a biopsychosocial perspective. A sample of 89 caregivers responded to the survey, which was hosted on a closed internet-based support group. It used the biomarker HbA1c as a measure of metabolic control and has chosen to look at the psychosocial constructs; locus of control, social support and satisfaction with life in the caregiver. The study proposes that in times of constrained resources these psychological aspects of caregiver support are not adequately supported and that this may have implications for the health of their chronically-ill dependents. The study found significant relationships between locus of control, informational and practical support and health outcomes. It was found that locus of control, feeling understood and social supports have associations with wellbeing. The qualitative data supports this. A number of cost-effective interventions are proposed. en
