    Abstract
‘Pathological Gambling is defined as a progressive disorder characterized by continuous or periodic loss of control over gambling; a preoccupation with gambling and obtaining money for gambling; irrational behaviour and continuation of the gambling behaviour in spite of adverse consequence’, (Rosenthal,1992). This research project investigated the gender differences on entry into pathological gambling in Ireland. This study was based on male and female pathological gamblers in Ireland all in recovery with GA. This study employed 5 men and 5 women ranging in age from late 20's to late 50's. It was conducted using a phenomenological qualitative approach (IPA) and a semi-structured interview was devised from the literature read in relation to previous studies. The findings support and refute previous research. Future research areas are suggested and discussed. The study concludes by highlighting the author's interpretation of what draws a person into pathological gambling.
