Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between student personality, self-esteem, demographics and alcohol dependency in an Irish university. Participants consisted of 101 DBS students which included sixty-four males and thirty-seven females, with ages ranging from 19-37 years (M= 23.47; SD=3.55). The data collected consisted of mean scores on the Big Five Inventory as well as data on self-esteem, alcohol dependence, financial debt and employment status. No significant correlation was found between alcohol dependency and Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness and self-esteem. Males were observed to report significantly greater alcohol dependency than females. Females were observed to depend less on alcohol as they became older. Males were found to have lower self-esteem when they were unemployed. Limitations of the current study and areas for further research are discussed.
