In the course of a day an individual can leave a number of virtual imprints, from paying for goods and services electronically to sending and receiving e-maiis, all of which can be traced and stored by service providers one uses. This is the subject under investigation: who and what has access and control of this passing information. In order to fully realise an understanding of this, the sources and uses of this information will be analysed. In addition, the legal protection available to safeguard ones personal information will also be presented. However, the legal protection will prove to be inadequate for any sort of peace of mind.
