The study of outsourcing the internal information technology function was conducted to provide the reader and the author with some concept of the business benefit in acquiring a strategic partner. Outsourcing is common practice in business today. The topic is of particular interest because it currently has a direct impact on the organisations mentioned throughout this report. The staffs of these organisations are only beginning to fully understand the principles of outsourcing. The area of outsourcing and strategic partners is broad in nature, it is not limited to information technology but in this instance the report is focused on outsourcing the internal information technology function. The aim of the report is to provide readers with a deeper knowledge of the subject. Throughout the process of gathering primary and secondary research it was clear that the general level of knowledge on the topic was good. The morale of the individual at the time of the interview impacted hugely on their opinion of outsourcing, the benefits of IT partners and the disadvantage of IT partners. A conclusion from this would be that the topic is an emotional one, ironically as businesses, if to be profit making try to avoid emotion. The main finding in this study is that the key to a successful partnership is to first identify what you hope to achieve and secondly, get professional assistance when it comes to drawing up the contract. The service level agreement is the most important element of the partnership. Knowledge management is of extreme importance in an outsourcing situation. It is recommended that a knowledge management system be implemented prior to the role out or hand over of systems to the partner. In conclusion, there are shared benefits for everyone once the ground rules are in place and progress is monitored.
