The focus of this research dissertation is Business Continuity planning (BCP) with
particular reference to devising a process of "good practice" and the relevance of the
concept to Irish small and medium enterprises (SME's). As primary research a
questionnaire, Simulation model and case study were completed. The literature
review includes data from the Business Continuity Institute (BCI), the US
Government, the European Commission and the Computer Network Technologies
Corporation (CNT). The findings of this research dissertation include the costs of
production downtime to an Irish SME, the considerations underlying effective BCP,
the steps in a process of "good practice" in BCP and the future developments in BCP
in relation to Irish SME's. The conclusion and recommendation of this research
dissertation is that BCP is crucial to surviving in the Information Society and that
Irish SME's should be engaging in developing a BCP.
