The Irish commercial insurance industry had remained unchanged up until the late 1950's early 1960's which brought about the introduction of computer is at ion. E-commerce within the general insurance sector has been in existing for a number of years since, with such business processes having been introduced such as Electronic Data Interface (E.D.I.) back in the early eighties. Although this format has generally been geared toward a personal lines basis, no such development has been undertaken within the commercial environment. Originally, new market areas only came about from a national to international level through our involvement with such bodies as the EC. However, this has now extended into a global scale with the introduction of the Internet through the World Wide Web. The advent of e-commerce through the Internet has now caused numerous waves in all areas if insurance i.e. insurers, intermediaries and consumers. Once again the personal lines market has grasped the advantages concerning same, however, due to the various complexities relating to commercial insurance, it is only recently that the main players within the market have begun to focus on the latter. While Europe and Ireland in particular are somewhat lagging compared to our counterparts in the U.S., valuable important information together with past and modem experiences can therefore be obtained and utilised. The commercial insurance market is opening up in a variety of areas and we in Ireland seem to be better prepared than what was originally believed. However, it is in the interest of all stakeholders involved to embrace and take maximum advantage on this new revolution that is about to take part within the commercial sector, rather than be left behind.
