In my essay I will describe Sigmund Freud's theory of the Oedipus complex. I will then
describe the Oedipus complex theories of Melanie Klein and Jacques Lacan and show some of the ways in which these theories differ from that of Freud, along with some of the ways in which they are similar. In order to expand upon some of the points in my essay I will refer to some clinical work carried out by Freud. This consists of his case history "Analysis of a Phobia in a Five-Year-Old Boy" (1909). I will also outline some of Lacan's views on this case history in order to show some of the distinctions between his theory and that of Freud. In elaborating Klein's view of the complex I will outline some of the differences between her practices and those Freud employed and show how these practices have lead her to develop a theory of the complex that has many differences to that of Freud.
