    Abstract
This dissertation will focus on how the beating phantasy develops during the Oedipus complex, and how it will continue to persist in later life, representing a perverse or masochistic residue of the Oedipus complex, that will effect the adult sexual life of the subject in some manner. Drawing on one particular case, it will be shown how difficult it is to sublimate the beating phantasy. Throughout this dissertation, the beating phantasy will be equated with an abnormal or perverse sexual development.
