The centre forward is Robin Friday, who played for Reading between 1973 and 1976 and for a brief but distinguished spell for Cardiff, before leaving professional football for good altogether in 1977. Thirteen years later, he was found dead, alone in his flat, probably from heart failure. He was 38. The story of Robin Friday, as the recent biography attests, is the story of ‘the man who didn’t give a fuck’. As the authors visit the crematorium where he is commemorated they are struck by the incongruity of the silence, for if they have discovered one thing in their journey into the life and character of Robin Friday, it is that noise followed him everywhere.
