The main text this project is discussed under three main sections. Each of these is a "stage" of barcoding. Each section develops in logical progression from the previous. The project commences with a profile of Wessel Energy Cables detailing the company structure and what they produce. The profile is comprehensive so as to familiarise any reader with the company. An introduction and the research sources are subsequently discussed. The main text begins with a detailed introduction and insight into the concept of barcoding. Chapter one overviews how the technology will contribute towards a global information system in the future and reviews how it is presently developing in Ireland with an example of one industry in particular which have made barcoding the central tool in dealing with their trading partners. Chapter two discusses how a barcode works and how it is made up. This concludes Section I. Section 11 Technology focuses specifically on implementing barcode into Wessel Energy Cables. It develops from defining the problem, presenting the options available to overcome such a problem through to introducing barcoding. To enable a comprehensive barcode system to be implemented successfully, a review of the current system, indicating its weaknesses was analysed. Chapter six brings to an end the section discussing how barcoding could improve the current system and procedures. A number of developments are suggested in relation to the current information system (MIS) and how it could be improved, in order to maximise the utility of barcode technology. However, as mentioned in the recommendations, these suggestions could be taken into account independent of implementing barcodes. Section III takes an overview of Article Numbering, the concept under which barcodes operate and recognizes other technologies that could be introduced as a result. Electronic Data Interchange is driven by article numbering and its introduction would be a logical step onwards when barcode technology is in place. The lack of data communication within Wessel Energy Cables is identified and discussed. The conclusion takes an outline of the entire project and examines the effect the proposed system would have on the logistics of the firm. The actions management should take after reading this work are itemised in point form in the recommendations.
