This research utilised psychoanalytical and psychodynamic perspectives to explore transference issues when working psychotherapeutically with couples presenting with intimate partner violence (IPV). Five separate semi-structured interviews were conducted with three male and two female participants who are practising and accredited therapists from diverse psychotherapeutic orientations. Interview transcripts were analysed using qualitative thematic analysis. Three superordinate themes emerged, the findings of which highlight the importance of the therapist maintaining an awareness of how their relationship experiences, and personal belief regarding gender and IPV may influence the treatment process through the processes of transference and countertransference. The results revealed conflicting views regarding screening, assessment and safety procedures. The findings may pose important implications for training and supervision, as well as the treatment of IPV in individual or couple work.en
