Abstract
Mentorship and education have become the core driver of Columbia University Libraries’ journals publishing program. Open access and support for projects featuring diverse and underrepresented voices are integral to our mission, but beyond a platform for scholarship, we also perceive the Libraries’ journals initiative as a unique opportunity for editors to gain skills and insights into publishing that will benefit them as scholars. As the program continues to grow, adding seven new journals to our thirty active publications in 2019, the Digital Scholarship team has recognized the need to create group learning environments and clear expectations and points of contact between journal editors and the Digital Publishing Librarian to scale the program while maintaining quality and adherence to Library guidance. This presentation will outline how in-person workshops, crafted around the major steps in the publishing cycle, offered opportunities to connect with journal editors and to inculcate an ethical framework and critical perspectives on academic scholarship and publishing. The “Digital Publishing Workshop” offered opportunities to form connections with faculty and student editors and reinforced the value of hands-on mentorship. However, our wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and faculty editors in a multitude of disciplines created a need for different modes of instruction, including blended and remote learning opportunities and presentations tailored to individual groups. The Digital Publishing Workshop @ Columbia has become a model for publishing partnerships at the libraries; future services such as multimodal monograph publishing or podcasting are being conceived of around a defined set of educational resources and learning opportunities, making active education in publishing and the Libraries’ ethical, preservation, and scholarly best practices requirements for our students and scholars.
