Abstract
This study examined the personality characteristics, self-esteem, self-efficacy, coping
types of groups of non-smokers, ex-smokers, and current smokers. The sample
consisted of college students. No significant differences were observed between the
three groups on self-esteem, self-efficacy, and coping types. No age effect was
observed either. Significant differences were observed between smokers, and nonsmokers
on extraversion, F (2, 122) = 5.1, p < .01. The hierarchical multiple
regression model has found extraversion (b = .34, p < .001), neuroticism (b = .2, p <
.05), conscientiousness (b = -.18, p < .05), and age (b = .34, p < .001) predictive of
number of smoking cigarettes a day. Author keywords: Smoking, personality
