This paper is concerned with raising questions regarding the casual factors of psychogenic autism. There is no definitive cause of autism so I have drawn on ideas formulated by Sigmund Freud and developed by Jacques Lacan. I have used Frances Tustin's ideas as a template because her ideas on the causes of psychogenic autism appear to be in agreement with certain Lacanian theories e.g. she inadvertently draws attention to the complex of weaning and intrusion, to the development of the ego, what she describes as "me-ness" and to the general sense of lack these children perceive. Tustin also mentions the role of the father in the life of autistic children. She however is writing from an object relations point of view whereas I am aspiring to augment her ideas with Lacanian theories.
