Abstract
Using the EPQ-R (Eysenck and Eysenck, 1991), this study compared the personality characteristics of groups of smokers, non-smokers and ex-smokers in Ireland after the implementation of the 2004 workplace smoking ban. Inter-correlation between scores for neuroticism, psychoticism and addiction was observed, p (2-tailed) < 0.05. No significant differences were observed between the three groups for neuroticism, psychoticism, addiction, venturesomeness or the lie scale. Mean scores for extraversion were found to differ significantly between groups, F(2,96) = 3.737; p < 0.05. Mean scores for impulsiveness also differed significantly between groups, F(2,96) = 3.461; p < 0.05. Tukey post-hoc analysis found that this represented differences in mean scores between smokers and non-smokers, p (2-tailed) < 0.05.
