There are ample studies available in relation to bullying behaviour and bully / victim problems (O’Moore. 1995; Tattum, 1997) and in Ireland, an International Conference on Bullying was held in Trinity College in 1996. However the issues of stress and coping with personality types has not been addressed to nearly the same level (Compas, Malcarne and Fondacaro. 1988). These issues are the focus of the present study. A survey of 142 respondents aged between 14 and 18 years looked at levels of bullying combined with stress and how pupils coping strategies came into play. Suggestions for the role the community plays in management and prevention of bullying behaviour are outlined and these results are interpreted in relation to previous studies.
