Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between Non-cognitive traits, Alcohol Dependency and Academic Stress amongst 79 university students (N=79). Previous research has shown a link between alcohol and stress in students as well as between these variables and Grit and Impulsivity. A quantitative, correlational and quasi-experimental design was used to investigate these relationships. A questionnaire was used with a number of self-reporting measures and analysed using scales for Academic Stress, Alcohol Dependency, Impulsivity and Grit. Mode of study was also used as a variable to investigate a difference in scores of part-time and full-time students. The findings revealed no significant relationship between Alcohol Dependency, Academic Stress and Mode of Study. They also revealed no significant relationship between stress and Alcohol Dependency, or Grit and stress. Although a significant relationship was found between Impulsivity and stress. The results of a regression analysis revealed a relationship between Academic Stress, Alcohol Dependency and Impulsivity, which further revealed a significant relationship between Alcohol Dependency and Impulsivity.
