Abstract

This study investigated the discrepancy between the levels of body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem among dancers and non-dancers in Ireland and America. Participants of the study completed a questionnaire, which consisted of the Body Shape Questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and the General Health Questionnaire. There was also open-ended questions in relation to how the media, such as the different kinds of pictures in magazines, influenced attitudes toward body satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Questions in relation to exercise and how much exercise a participant took part in were also addressed. The predictor variable was body image, while the criterion variables were American and Irish dancers, non-dancers. Results found that there was no significant difference between the predictor and criterion variables (F (1, 80) = 0.512 p>0.05).
