Abstract
This study involved the face-to-face surveying of professionals from sample areas associated with the issue of Ethics in Irish banking today. The purpose of which was to examine business ethics in Irish business and the impact of the human resource manager on this situation. Of the professionals examined three were a variety of managerial roles (50% non-specific and 50% human resource based). All managers were presented with questionnaires outlining main areas regarding Irish ethical dilemmas. An overall analysis of results is given. Each was asked to rate behaviour in each situation on a Likert Scale of one to six. In addition, the managers had their questionnaires analysed to test the hypothesis that business ethics has adopted increased importance in the human resource role over the past 2 - 3 years. Any variances in the replies of the individual managers is highlighted and discussed. Overall the results of the survey showed that business ethics has increased as a central corporate issue but not overtly so. This study of business ethics in the Irish context has been motivated by the many scandals of the past year and beyond relating to questionable ethical behaviour in universal companies such as Enron, Arthur Anderson, Tyco, Dynegy, Adelphia, Worldcom and so on. Preliminary secondary research was undertaken to gain a greater understanding of the area of business ethics and the management disciplines examined.
