Abstract

This dissertation is a study of the motivational theories both past and present and their relevance to current business practices. The dissertation will focus on the key questions: (1) Do motivational theories apply in an organisation today; and (2) In relation to Company X what recommendations can be derived from the results of the primary research that has been carried out within Company X. Company X has a current turnover rate of in excess 25% per annum with the majority of these people leaving due to reasons such as an increase in pay and job content. As Gunnigle says' people are the lifeblood of organisations' and it is imperative that good staff are retained by companies. Very often the key competitive advantage that a company may have is its people.
