Abstract
This study sought to explore if people with a drug addiction would have a greater external locus of control than non-addicted people and would differ in levels of self-efficacy. Previous research around this topic has been contradictory. The methodology was to target specific group of service users from the Addiction Team (n=35) and compare results with non-dependent participants (n=35) from staff of Dun-Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Instruments used consisted of three previously published paper pen questionnaires: LDQ, GSE and MHLC. A cross sectional between groups design was applied. Participants were requested to fill out a questionnaire booklet. The results of this study support the hypoFinal Year Project that drug dependent individuals have a more external locus of control along with lower self-efficacy.
